There are so many sources of
information available today that it is easy to overlook those on
your own doorstep. Your network of friends, family and local
community contacts are just as valuable and valid as sources of
information, as the Internet.
You can use a variety of tools to
access that community information:
-
Local libraries - you can join as many different public
libraries as you like, regardless of whether you live in that
council area. Apart from their collections and online databases,
they also offer homework help such as 'ask a librarian' email
service and 'your tutor' chat lines. They are also very good at
pointing you in the direction of local sources of information
e.g. local history associations, council services, local
business/employment. Your friendly teacher librarian can also
point you in the right direction for more community resources.
-
Write emails and letters -
There are lots of
'ask an expert' email services available. People will always
be more helpful when asked politely. These links will help you
use the correct form:
-
Interview people in the local community
-
Conduct
surveys to gather your own original data on local issues.
