It has been said that the Internet is like a library with all the books lying scattered on the floor - there is no universal organising system for the World Wide Web and there is no single search tool (not even Google!) that will search all the pages and all the websites on the Internet.

On the other hand, all libraries are organised using a similar system. The Dewey classification system means you will find similar information in the same place on the shelves, no matter which library you visit. Virtually all libraries have a computerised catalogue, which when used properly, will produce results that include magazine articles, DVDs and books, as well as websites.

School library collections are specially selected to support the subjects taught and to match the reading abilities of the students. Public libraries usually have separate sections for adults, teenagers and children. In country areas the school and public library service may be combined into a single school-community library.

Whichever library you use, make friends with your teacher librarian or librarian:-)
